Raw Papaya in Spicy Gravy

Ingredients

  • Raw Papaya, peeled n cut into ½inch pieces – 500gm
  • Dry Red Chili – 5nos (adjust to your spice level)
  • Onion, randomly cut – 1nos
  • Garlic, randomly chopped – 3nos
  • Ginger, randomly chopped – ½inch piece
  • Peanut – 1tbsp
  • Cashew nut – 10nos
  • Coconut Milk – ½cup (optional)
  • Cumin seeds – 1tsp
  • Coriander seeds – 2tsp
  • Yogurt – 1cup
  • Turmeric powder – 1tsp
  • Asafoetida – 1pinch
  • Oil – 1tbsp
  • Mustard – 1tsp
  • Salt – 1tsp (adjust to your taste)
  • Fresh Coriander leaves – 1bunch
  • Fresh Curry leaves – 1bunch

Method

  • Grind dry red chili, onion, garlic, ginger, peanut, cashew nuts, cumin seeds, coriander seeds into fine paste by adding very little water, keep aside
  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Add mustard, allow it to splutter
  • Add turmeric powder, asafoetida, curry leaves, raw papaya, stir fry
  • Sprinkle little water, close cook for couple of minutes
  • Add the ground paste, salt, mix well
  • Add about 1~1½cup of water
  • Simmer it for another 15min, until papaya cooks tender
  • Add coconut milk, yogurt, bring to a boil
  • Serve hot along with any rice item
